April is here, and spring sports are in full grind mode. Games every week, practices every day, and athletes pushing themselves to compete at a high level. This is the season.
This week, we are celebrating baseball. Both Peninsula and Gig Harbor are deep into their seasons, stacking wins, battling through tough matchups, and showing what it looks like to compete day in and day out. Clutch hits, big innings, and pitchers getting it done when it matters most. It has been fun to watch.
We are also celebrating H2Whoa, who brought home a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP in Pom last weekend. These athletes have been working for this moment all year, and they showed up in a big way when it counted.
And finally, we are spotlighting someone who represents exactly what we want PSD athletics to be about. Landon Schultz, a sophomore at Peninsula, is a SALC leader, a standout baseball player, and a youth coach giving back to the next generation. This is what a complete student-athlete looks like.
Time to play ball!

Baseball is not a sprint. It is a marathon.
The season is long, the games are frequent, and success requires consistency, mental toughness, and the ability to bounce back from adversity. You cannot win every game. You cannot get a hit every at-bat. But you can show up every single day and compete.
Both Peninsula and Gig Harbor baseball programs are doing exactly that this spring, and the results are showing.

PHS Coaching Staff:
-
Head Coach: Matt Thomas
-
Assistant Coaches: David Bingham, Patrick Cox, Clay Mauro
-
Volunteer Coaches: Aidan Bunn, Lee Miller, JP Williamson
The Peninsula Seahawks have opened the season 8-0, establishing themselves early as one of the more complete teams in the area.
Their success has been driven by a balanced approach at the plate and consistency on the mound, with multiple players contributing throughout the lineup rather than relying on a single standout performance.
|
Several athletes have paced the Seahawks offensively:
-
Thomas Marzano (8 games, Junior): .552 batting average
-
Landon Schultz (7 games, Sophomore): .529 batting average
-
Pete Browand (8 games, Junior): .429 batting average
-
Kaleb Copeland (8 games, Senior): .417 batting average
On the mound, Peninsula has limited opposing offenses behind strong outings from Kaleb Copeland and Logan Johnson.
Copeland has logged 14.2 innings with 21 strikeouts, posting a 0.955 ERA while holding opponents to a .176 batting average. Johnson has been similarly effective, recording 18 strikeouts over 11.2 innings with a 1.2 ERA and a .150 opponent average.
Johnson has also contributed offensively, batting .250 with a .565 on-base percentage and four RBIs, providing value on both sides of the game.
|
Beyond the numbers, Peninsula has shown an ability to play clean, disciplined baseball. The Seahawks have consistently put together competitive at-bats, applied pressure on the bases, and minimized mistakes defensively.
While the schedule will continue to test them, Peninsula’s depth and consistency have been key factors in their strong start.

-
Assistant Coaches: Steve Atkinson, Colton Robinson
-
Volunteer Coaches: Shawn Bush, Aden Deschenes, Jason Krilich, Mike Riley, Heath Wimberley, Brandon Wolfe
The Gig Harbor Tides sit at 5-5 overall and 5-2 in league play, navigating a competitive schedule while continuing to find their rhythm. This is a group that has already been tested. And more often than not, they have responded.
|
Gig Harbor has seen steady production from key contributors at the plate:
-
Jason Coray (9 games, Sophomore): .379 batting average, .471 on-base percentage
-
Hunter Payne (10 games, Senior): .355 batting average, .535 on-base percentage
-
Camden Bentley (10 games, Junior): .345 batting average, .475 on-base percentage
They have done a good job getting on base and creating opportunities, keeping pressure on opposing defenses throughout games.
Where the Tides have really made their mark is on the mound.
-
Quentin Bockhorn (Senior): 14 IP, 17 K, .125 opponent average
-
Jake Cuda (Senior): 12 IP, 20 K, .116 opponent average
With numerous reliable arms leading the staff, Gig Harbor has been able to stay in games and control the pace, especially in league matchups.
|
The Tides have faced adversity this season, but they have continued to compete. At 5-2 in league play, they remain in position to make a push as the schedule progresses. Their ability to limit runs and produce offensively has kept them competitive in tight matchups.
As the season continues, the Tides will look to build on their league success and finish strong.
⚾ Up Next for the Tides:
- 🚌 April 6 @ Lincoln (Away)
- 🏟️ April 7 vs. Lincoln (Home)
- 🏟️ April 11 vs. Curtis (Home)

Between both schools, we have nine volunteer coaches dedicating their time to these baseball programs. These coaches are not getting paid. They are balancing their own jobs, families, and responsibilities while showing up to practices, coaching games, and investing in young athletes because they love the game and believe in these kids.
To every volunteer coach in PSD baseball: Thank you. You are making a difference!

Landon Schultz is a sophomore at Peninsula High School. He is a multi-sport athlete competing in both football and baseball. He is one of the youngest members of SALC, quickly establishing himself as a leader. He is batting .529 for the Seahawks baseball team. And in his free time, he volunteers as a youth baseball coach.
This is what a complete student-athlete looks like.
On the Field
Landon has played seven games this season with a .529 batting average. In the Seahawks' 13-5 win over River Ridge on Thursday, he collected three hits in four at-bats, including a double and two singles.
He does not just get hits. He delivers in big moments, with a calm, confident approach that makes everyone around him better.
|
In SALC
As a member of the Student-Athlete Leadership Council, Landon is already making a meaningful impact. He helps organize events, promote sportsmanship, and build connections between athletes across the district. He shows up. He does the work. He leads by example. He represents Peninsula with pride.
Giving Back
In his free time, Landon volunteers as a youth baseball coach, working with younger players and teaching them the fundamentals of the game. The younger kids truly look up to him, and he takes that responsibility seriously. Most high school sophomores are focused on their own performance. Landon is doing that and giving back to the next generation.
Every Coach's Dream
Landon works hard. He competes with intensity. He makes everyone around him better. He leads by example. He does the right thing, even when no one is watching.
Landon, keep doing what you are doing. You are setting the standard for what it means to be a Peninsula Seahawk, a SALC member, and a leader in this community.

H2Whoa brought home a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP last weekend!
The Gig Harbor dance team competed at the WIAA State Championships and earned a state title with their pom routine "Tatiana." After finishing second at State in pom for the past two years, the Tides finally claimed the top spot.
But that was not all. H2Whoa also competed in dance and hip hop, finishing 4th in Dance and 6th in Hip Hop.
This team works year-round to perfect these routines. They practice relentlessly, compete at the highest level, and represent Gig Harbor with excellence. Many of these athletes also compete at local studios year-round and perform in the famous Nutcracker Ballet each winter.
Congratulations on an incredible season. You worked for this. You earned it. Enjoy this moment, you are STATE CHAMPIONS!!!

H2Whoa has three seniors graduating this year: Emma, Britta, and Kate.
Britta is also a member of our Student-Athlete Leadership Council (SALC), and we appreciate everything she has brought to PSD athletics. She is a leader on the dance team, a leader in SALC, and someone who represents what it means to be a complete student-athlete.
And this week, Britta was selected as WIAA Athlete of the Week! Congratulations, Britta. This recognition is well-deserved.
